A9 closed as crane falls on railway line

A crane fell on to the train line at Portgower on Sunday afternoon, closing the A9 in both directions.

TRAFFIC Scotland have reported that the A9 is closed at Sutherland after a crane fell on to the train line at Portgower, causing travel chaos in Caithness. 

The British Transport Police reported that the accident took place at 9.05am on Sunday morning, believing it was caused by the vehicle driving over unsteady ground caused by nearby roadworks.

It has been reported that nobody has been injured as a result of the accident.

The road was closed at 2.30pm  with recovery operations currently taking place, expecting to last until the late hours of Sunday evening.

Traffic Scotland advise that no diversions have been put in place and the road is closed in both directions, advising motorists to cancel their journeys.

No rail services have run north of Helmsdale as a result of the incident on Sunday.
