SIR – Is it possible to find out if the school at Achavanich is still standing? I know it has not been used as a school for a very long time and the property next door was owned by the Mackay family.
I went to that school many years ago and had some very happy times in that area. The education was not the best but, having a very good primary education, you can easily get to a very high standard if you so desire.
My mother and father were in charge of the poorhouse, that was its name. My father’s name was John Fraser. The first teacher’s name was Campbell. Jessie Sutherland was the cook at that home for many years. Gunn was the person in charge of Latheron Post Office. Bunt went to that school with me and I think his correct name was MacAlster Clark.
I was in Malaya with the British National Service Army and worked in London; on return home I could not settle down. I then joined the Australian Army in London and came out to Australia by ship. The ship broke down and we were late in Melbourne, the temperature was over a 100 and no-one knew anything about us.
I am now in a very nice retirement village with a heated swimming pool.
